So yesterday was the big day!
I traveled down to Washington Hospital Center (this involved driving, the Subway, and an inter-city bus) and arrived at 9am. I shadowed two very competent and friendly Nurses in in their trauma/burn step-down unit, and the Emergency Department. We got free food (people like to feed Nurses, apparently), and then at the end of the day I had my first interview for a Nursing position.
I don’t want to jinx myself, but I think it went really well! It was nearly an hour long, and I feel like it was truly a vigorous interview. They didn’t just try to sell their hospital, I felt as though it was a rigorous selection process. They asked difficult clinical questions about multiple clinical situations and patients, they asked me to anticipate physician orders, know what I would need to know about treating certain emergent situations, and how I would handle difficult patients and situations. I really connected with the interviewers, and I think I impressed them with my professionalismand how prepaired I was. Now the waiting game begins….I should know if they are going to offer me a Fellowship position in about a week. I don’t know if I can take the waiting!
It is a long commute, but the hospital is the most amazing place for me to jump-start my career as a Registered Nurse. I love the idea of working in a true inter-city location, and it has the potential to be an amazing experience.
On another note, today is Nora’s Homecoming! I am picking her up from her mother’s house in about an hour, and we are getting massages, doing hair, makeup and nails. I will post pictures as soon as I have them!!!
